Abstract
Interpretation of the USPS mail carrier ZIP Codes. Data derived from taxlot and master address information published with RLIS-Lite. This data in no way reflects exact USPS mail carrier routes and should be used accordingly.
Purpose
Mapping and spatial analysis.
Supplemental information
The fact that ZIP Codes aren't required to be polygons makes them difficult to map. They are networks of streets served by mail carriers or just individual post offices and are a tool for mail delivery. They also change periodically as required to meet USPS operational needs. Metro has created this file by interpolating boundaries between occurrences of ZIP Codes on the ground using taxlot and master address information. However, this does not guarantee that the USPS delivery routes will follow this interpretation.

Lineage

Process Description
Projection information (.prj file), compatible with ArcGIS 8.1, was added to the layer.
Process date
20010715
Process Description
In coverage the Zipno item modified from binary to character type. In the derived shapefile and SDE_layer the Zipcode field was also modified to a character type.
Process date
20021031
Process Description
In the coverage data the field Zipno is now a number item and Zipcode is character. I have added a field for the feature Name. This is in most cases the default name for the Zip Code area except when the default name does not accurately describe the polygon such as Portland instead Tigard. A field, Location, has been added which is the City or County where the label point of the polygon falls. A field named Type has been added which indicates the type of Zip Code: 1 = Standard, 2 = Post Office, 3 = Building.
